There is something about a matric dance that feels unlike any other event I photograph in Cape Town. The anticipation, the gowns, the carefully chosen corsages, the drama of a fancy car pulling up to the entrance. It is pure theatre, and I am here for every second of it.
This year I had the privilege of photographing the matric dance for Springfield Convent, and what a night it was. The red carpet arrivals alone were worth the price of admission. Students stepped out of stunning vehicles in the most beautiful dresses, and the energy in the air was electric. My assistant Sue was working the room all evening, capturing candid moments that tell the story between the posed shots. It is always a team effort, and Sue absolutely delivered.
"The red carpet arrivals told a story that no filter can replicate. These are the images you will still be looking at in twenty years."
A word about your phone
Something I noticed on the night, and I say this with complete understanding: the students were often more focused on their phones than the professional photographer in the room. And honestly? I get it. Phones offer instant gratification. You shoot, you see, you post. Done.
But here is what I want you to know if you have a matric dance coming up in Cape Town: professional images are worth the wait. The dynamic range, the depth, the way the light wraps around a gown in a darkened venue. No smartphone, regardless of how impressive the camera specs have become, fully replicates what a photographer with the right gear and years of experience can do in a low-light ballroom setting. These are the images you frame. The ones that end up on walls and in albums that get pulled out at 21sts and weddings.
So if your school has hired a Cape Town event photographer for your matric dance, please use them. Make the most of those red carpet moments. The results will genuinely surprise you.
A personal note
Photographing this event hit a little closer to home than usual. My own daughter has her matric dance coming up later this year. I will not be behind the lens that night as her photographer, but I will absolutely be there to capture her pre-dance moments. That one is strictly a proud parent job.
Matric dances are one of those events where the photographs matter far beyond the evening itself. If you are looking for a Cape Town matric dance photographer, or planning any kind of event photography in Cape Town, I would love to hear from you.
