An unlikely meeting
Esmaré and Dirk's love story began in an unexpected way—they met on a dating show. Dirk wasn't even supposed to be there, but he filled in for someone who didn’t show up. How incredible is that?
Up and coming dress designer
I first met Esmaré while shooting for Budism Couture, where she works as a talented up and coming dress designer. Fun fact: Esmaré designed and made her own wedding dress! It was a stunning piece—beautiful, understated, and elegant, suiting her perfectly.
The couple both got ready at the Cape Heritage Hotel, a contemporary chic hotel in Cape Town. This was the ideal setting for those intimate getting-ready shots with the bride. I did try to photograph the men, but as usual, they were too busy enjoying a few beers and lunch with not an apparent care in the world. So, I focused my lens on Esmaré instead.
Esmaré walked to the church!
One of my favourite moments was Esmaré's walk from the hotel through the streets of Cape Town to the church, just two blocks away. It's not every day that you get to capture a bride-to-be walking through the heart of the city.
Tears of joy
Dirk had tears in his eyes when he saw his stunning bride walk up the aisle with her dad!
Their ceremony was intimate, surrounded by close family and friends, and short but meaningful. And then came the confetti—oh, the confetti! It’s been ages since I’ve seen traditional paper confetti, and it went everywhere! Esmaré was still being de-confetti'd long after.
Shooting in the Cape Town central is a favourite for me
For their couple photos, we stayed in town, which I always love. Then came Blue, Esmaré and Dirk’s adorable cocker spaniel, who absolutely stole the show.
A speakeasy in Cape Town
Esmare and Dirk held their reception at the Art of Duplicity, which is an delightfull "speakeasy" designed venue in Cape Town
My photography style
I always mix posed and documentary-style shots. I set up the scene but let the couples interact naturally, which results in real, authentic moments that they’ll treasure for years to come.
