Time flies!
You can imagine my surprise when Andrew asked me to photograph his wife Chane’s 40th birthday, after 13 years of marriage! It's incredible how time flies.
I've known Andrew for years! We worked together in the wedding industry — me as a photographer and Andrew on video. I remember when it felt like he had just graduated from university.
The event was held at The Homestead restaurant in Plumstead, Cape Town. The food and service were fantastic, and I can’t wait to shoot there again.
The brief was simple: stay in the background and capture the event as it unfolded, nothing posed.
I deviate from the brief and here's why...
That’s where I tend to deviate a bit. While capturing candid, "fly on the wall" moments is great, there are also wonderful opportunities to gather people for group shots. It’s as easy as saying, "Hey, can I get a picture of the group?" Most people are delighted when I ask.
It's so important to put people at ease.
I always tell them I'll take two shots and tease them a little if they're nervous — it helps create rapport and relaxes them instantly. This always results in genuine smiles and beautiful memories on camera.
I'm a sucker for speeches
The evening was relaxed and fun, with heartfelt speeches that I loved. I’m a sucker for speeches — they often contain the most touching tributes, and yes, they can make me a bit emotional, but I don’t mind.
Dancing makes great photos!
Next to that, my favourite part is the dance floor. That’s where personalities truly shine! So many great moments to capture.
Happy 40th, Chane! It was a pleasure to document such a milestone celebration. It’s wonderful to see how your family has flourished!
